Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
On Wednesday, members of the joint platform of Kamtapur People's Party and Kamtapur Progressive Party submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate of Cooch Behar demanding a CBI inquiry into the Kaliaganj incident.
The United Forum gathered at the Ras Mela ground in Coochbehar and marched in a rally to the District Magistrate's office via various routes of the city. The protesters demonstrated and shouted slogans before submitting the memorandum.
The Kamtapur People's Party President, Kangsraj Burman, said that a minor girl was raped and murdered in Kaliaganj, and the way the police dragged her dead body was shameful. During the protests over the incident, the police opened fire on the protesters, which resulted in the death of a local youth named Mrityunjay Barman. The joint forum demanded a CBI inquiry into both incidents.
Burman also stated that the Scheduled Tribes were not safe in the state, and he demanded the implementation of Article 356. The article grants the Indian President the power to proclaim a state of emergency if he/she is satisfied that a situation has arisen where the governance of a state cannot be carried out according to the provisions of the Constitution.
The incident has sparked outrage and protests across the state, and the government has been criticized for its handling of the case. The demand for a CBI inquiry indicates a lack of trust in the state police and administration to conduct a fair investigation.
